Abstract

In this paper, the writer analyzes about the depression of the main character in I Was Here, it is a novel by Gayle Forman. The novel is about Megan Gracia, a girl who had depression in tenth grade of her school. The writer uses psychological theory to analyze the depression in I Was Here. The technique of the research applied by the writer is a close reading to understand this novel and help the writer to do the analysis. The analysis has two goals which are the symptoms of the main character‘s depression and the causes of the main character‘s depression. The depression of the main character which is shown by several symptoms. There are the feeling of hopelessness, the decreased of energy, oversleeping and the thoughts of suicide or even the suicide attempts. The causes of the main character‘s depression are genetic and situational. In conclusion, the feeling of hopelessness, oversleep and others symptoms of depression can lead someone commit to suicide, then the genetic and the trauma can make someone had depression.
