Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out translation technique usage by the translator for the movie “The Greatest showman” subtitles, a film based from real life story of P.T Barnum with a bit of exaggeration and music shows, this research uses theory of translation from Peter Newmark (1988), data will be gained by watching the entire film and also comparing both Indonesian subtitle and English subtitle and then identifying, counting and concluding the data. The result showed there are 1546 dialogue can be found in the movie, and eight method were used in this translation to translate the movie these included; word-to-word translation, literal translation, semantic translation, faithful translation, adaptation translation, free translation, idiomatic translation and communicative The translator has used word to word translation as 645 times literal 175 times idiomatic with 23 times free translation 354 times adaptation 4 timessemantic 123 times faithful 23 times and communicative 199 times marking the word-to word translation as the highest translation technique usage in this translation resulting the most usage translation technique in this work is word-to-word translation
