Abstract

The aim of this research is to find and describe sad expressions found in James Arthur song lyrics based on the theory proposed by Goleman (1997). Emotional expression or emotion refers to feeling and its special thought, some biological condition, and physiological condition act. This research discusses what are the kinds of sad expressions found in the song lyrics of James Arthur and how are the sadness expressed in the song lyrics of James Arthur. In doing this research writer would like to use qualitative methods. The source of data in this study is the song lyrics of James Arthur. There are eight song lyrics from different albums that will be the source of the data in this research. After the writer collected the data, the writer will be analyzed and interpreted the data in the table. From the data, the writer found nine expressions of sadness contained in the lyrics of James Arthur's song, of the eleven types of expressions of sadness that were classified according to Goleman, namely (1) Pain (2) Sad (3) Gloomy (4) Depressed (5) Melancholic (6) Pathetic (7) Lonely (8) Desperate (9) Rejected, and was not found expressions of hazy and vague were found because in the data there were no lyrics that matched those emotions. The writer also finds additionally discovered two different ways to communicate emotion, they’re literal and non-literal. In non-literal the writer only found four figurative languages, that is a metaphor, simile, personification, and hyperbola. All of the findings will be discussed in this thesis.
