Abstract

The writer studies Conflict on two short stories; The Mask and The Diary of a Madman by Guy De Maupassant. The research is focused on the character conflict and setting are describes in the purpose of the study to analyze the character conflict and setting in the short stories. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method with structuralism. The study applied close reading technique with procedure reading short stories The Mask and The Diary of a Madman repeatedly, reading the literary critics on the Maupassant short stories, finding out the conflict, selecting and picking the data up which related the problems. The result is the character conflicts in two short stories are related to the setting and plot in the story. In The Mask, the old dancer struggling with his inner thought while in conflict with other character which is Madeleine. In The Diary of a Madman, the Madman is conflict with his inner thought while he is in conflict with the society and his victims. Keywords:structuralism, character, setting, plot, and conflicts.
