Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe speaking problems encountered by the first year students of English Department FKIP Bung Hatta University. Specifically, it aimed to find out whether first year students at English Department FKIP of Bung Hatta University had problem or not in content, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and fluency. The design of this research was descriptive research.The population of this research was the first year students‟ at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 26 students. They were chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater technique. It means that there were two scorers to check the students‟ speaking recording. The correlation coefficients of two scores was 0.62. It means that the test was reliable. The result of this research showed that the students had grammar problem in speaking. It was proved that 69.2% students had problems in grammar. For the other aspect, students had no problem in content, pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency. It was indicated from the result that 100% students had no problem in content, 96.2% had no problem in pronunciation, 53.8% had no problem in vocabulary and 100% had no problem in fluency.
