Abstract

This reasearch was aimed at finding out a correlation betweens students motivation and their reading interest toward their reading comprehension in understanding narrative text of third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University The number of population was 52 students . Students are dstributed in one class. The researcher took 20 sample for try out and 32 sample real test. The researcher gethered the data by using questionnaire to measure students motivation and their reading interest. And reading test to measure their reading compehension of narrative text. To analyse the data, the researcher used person product moment formula and Double correlation formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that students‟ motivation and reading interest was classified as high, and their reading comprehension of narrative text was also high. In addition,, she found that the value of coefficient correlation between students‟ motivation and reasding comprehension of narrative text was 0,98 and r-counted bigger than r- table (0,98>0,349). It means there is significant correlation ,the second finding that value of coefficient correlation between reading interest and reading comprehension of narrative text was 0,098 with r-counted bigger than r- table (0,98>0,349). It means there is significant correlation .and third that value of coeeficient correlation between students motivation and reading interest was 0,93with r-counted bigger than r- table (0,93>0,349). It means there is significant correlation. Therefore, the relationship between three variables, students motivation and reading interest and reading comprehension of narrative text was significant.there was coefficient correlation between student motivation and reading interest toward their reading comprehensionin understanding narrative text was 0,99 with f-counted bigger than f- table (0,98>0,349) it means there is significant correlation. Learning from result,it this study be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students motivation and their reading interest toward their reading comprehension in understanding narrative text of third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Related to the conclution. This study suggested to the lecturer to improve students motivation and reading interest, to in order improve their reading comprehension.
