Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the first year students’ ability in guessing word meaning by using context clues at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 26 students. The researcher took all members of population as sample for reading test to find out their ability to guess word meaning by using context clues. To find the reliability of the test, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment formula and Spearman-Brown Formula. After analyzing the data, researcher found that students’ ability in guessing word meaning by using context clues was classified as high. Researcher found that percentage of students whose scores was ≥81 was 26.92%, and ≥65 - 80 was 73.08%. In addition, researcher found the students’ ability in using definition clues and example clues were both classified into very high ability (≥81) with percentage 19.23%, high ability (score between 65-80 ) with percentage 76.92%, and moderate ability (score between 55-65) was 3.85%; students’ ability in contrast clues was classified into very high ability (score≥81) was 23.08%, high ability (score between 65-80) was 65.38%, and moderate ability (score between 55-65) was 11.54%; students’ ability in using inference clues was classified into very high ability (score≥81) was 34.62%, high ability (score between 65-80) was 53.85%, moderate ability (score between 55-65) was 3.85%, and low ability(≤54) was 7.69%. From the result of this study, it can be concluded that the ability of the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in guessing word meaning by using context clues was high. Related to the conclusion, this study suggested to the next researcher to conduct the study related to this topic at senior high level in order to see the comparison.
