Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe students’ ability to produce aspirated stop at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 25 students, and they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through oral pronuncation test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the students’ pronounciation test. The correlation coefficient was 0.73. It means that the test was reliable. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability to produce aspirated stop could be classified into very good, good ability, and bad ability. It was proved by the findings that 68,% about 17 students had very good ability, and 24% about 6 students had good ability and then 4 % about 2 students had bad ability. Specifically, it also found that in producing aspirated stop /p/, 36 % about 9 students had very good ability, 52% about 13 students had good ability, 4% about 1 student had satisfactory, and 8% about 2 students had bad ability. In producing aspirated stop /t/, 52% about 13 students had very good ability, 32% about 8 students had good ability, 8% about 2 students had satisfactory and 8% about 2 students had bad abality. In producing aspirated stop /k/, 68% about 17 students had very good ability, 24% about 6 students had good ability and 8% about 2 students had bad ability. Based on the findings of this study, simple conclusion could be drawn that the students had equally distributed into very good ability. It is suggested that the students should maintain their ability to produce aspirated stop. Besides, the lecturers are suggested to give more explanation and exercises to improve students’ ability to produce aspirated stop. The next researcher is suggested to do related research.
