Abstract

This research was aimed at describe the third year students’ ability to comprehend procedure text. The design of this research was descriptive. The members of population of this research were 56. The researcher used total sampling in taking the sample.The researcher used this technique because the number of population at the second year students at SMA N 1 Bonjol are less than 100. So the researcher put all of population as the sample of this research. In collecting the data the researcher used reading test. Before the real test, it was tried out. The reliability index was 0.89 or high correlation (see Appendix 10). The items were 25, there were 19 items were revised and 6 items were accepted or good item (see Appendix 8). The total items for the real test were 25 (see Appendix 11). The researcher found that the students’ ability to comprehend procedure text was low. Itwas indicated by the fact that 21 students had low ability, thepercentage was 37% (see Appendix 14). Inmore specific, the researcher found theirabilityto comprehend procedure text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 51(91%) students had moderate ability to comprehend the goal (see Appendix 15). It was also found 26( 46%) students had moderate ability to comprehend the material (see Appendix 16). And last 24(43%) students had moderate ability to comprehend the step (see Appendix 17). Based on the findings,a simple conclusion could be drawn that the ability of the second year students’ ability to comprehend procedure text at SMA N 1 Bonjol was moderate. The writer suggested to the teachers at SMA N 1 Bonjol to review the material about procedure text. For the students, they are suggested to learn more about procedure text, and to do more exercise about reading comprehension especially procedure text. The further researchersare suggested to do a research on the difficulties of students in comprehending procedure text.They are also to find out the solution of the student’s problem to comprehend procedure text.
