Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze students’ ability to write noun phrase in simple sentence at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 24 students, they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through writing sentence test. To make the test reliable, the writer used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the students’ writing test. The correlation coefficient was 0.97. It means that the test was reliable. The result of this research showed that the students in general were good ability. It was proved by the finding that there is 50% students in having good ability. Specifically students’ ability to write noun phrase as subject in simple sentence was very good ability. It was supported by the data that 50% students had very good ability and students’ ability to write noun phrase as direct object in simple sentence was very good ability. It was supported by the data that there are 62.5% students had very good ability. Students’ ability to write noun phrase as indirect object in simple sentence was good ability. It was supported by the data that 45.83% students had good ability. Last, students’ ability to write noun phrase as complement in simple sentence was good ability. It was supported by the data that 41.67% students had good ability. Based on the finding of this study, simple conclusion could be drawn that the students were good ability. It is suggested that the students should maintain their ability to write noun phrase in simple sentence. Besides, the lecturers are suggested to minimize the students’ problem by giving more explanation and exercises to write noun phrase in simple sentence. And, the next researcher is suggested to do related research on writing noun phrase in simple sentence.
