Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe seventhgrade students’ speaking ability in expressing greeting and apologizing by using pictures at SMPN 4 Lubuk Alung. The design of this researchwas descriptive research. The population of this research was the firstgrade students at SMPN 4 Lubuk Alung with 145 students.The sample of this research was chosen by using simple random sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the students’ speaking recording. The correlation coefficients of two scores was 0.95. It means that the test was reliable. The result of this research showed that the students’ speaking ability in expressing greeting and apologizing by using pictures at SMPN 4 Lubuk Alung was bad. In general, the students’ speaking ability to express greeting and apologizing was classified into bad ability. It found that (65%) students got bad ability (see Appendix 6). In specific, the students’ speaking ability in expressing greeting was good. It was proved by finding that (54%) students had good ability (see Appendix 8), and the students’ speaking ability to express apologizing was bad, it was proved by finding that (54%) students got bad ability (see Appendix 10). Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that seventh grade students’ speaking ability in expressing greeting and apologizing by using pictures at SMPN 4 Lubuk Alung was bad. Therefore, the teachers are suggested to improve students’ speaking ability in speaking, and the students’ are suggested to do more practices to improve their speaking ability.
