Abstract

This research used the positive politeness strategies in Harry Potter and The Chambers of Secrets movie. Politeness do not only occur in daily conversations, but also in the dialogue found in a movie. This movie interesting to be analyzed in positive politeness strategies. This movie tells about unfamiliar characters and then they get close because they work together for one purpose and learn how important politeness to each other. The purpose of this research are (1) to describe the types strategies of positive politeness by the characters and also (2) to explain the social factor influenced the characters in Harry Potter and The Chambers of Secrets movie. This research employed descriptive qualitative research. It is done by collecting data, analyzing data that is a positive politeness strategy from the utterences of characters, giving explanations and drawing conclusions The data this research is a form of utterance spoken by the characters in Harry Potter and The Chambers of Secrets movie. The result of the research show two points. First, the writer find 7 strategies from 15 strategies based on Brown and Levinson, the writer found 13 dialogues contained in the 7 strategies of Positive Politeness and the most found is the fourth strategy, namely Include both S and H in the activity, there are 4 dialogues found in that strategy based on Brown and Levinson. Second, there are four social factor influence appear when the characters are positive politeness strategies based on Janet Holmes. They are the participants, the setting, the topic, the function. Mostly appear are the participants, the setting and the function. Meanwhile, the topic of social factor does not appear because the characters tend to only find out the purpose being talked about rather than expressing the topic being talked.
