Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the second year students’ ability to arrange jumbled sentences to create a descriptive paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The research questions was: how is the students’ ability to arrange jumbled sentences to create a descriptive paragraph describing a place, describing aperson and describing a thing at English Department of Bung Hatta University. This research was a descriptive method. The population of this research was the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total number of population was 24 students. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 20 students who were available that time.The instrument used to collect the data was writing test. The researcher asked students to arrange jumbled sentences to create a descriptive paragraph. She measured it by considering two componentsof writing (idea and mechanics). In analyzing the data, the researcher did the following steps. Firstly, she presented the score and she converted the score from scorer 1 and scorer 2, then she classified the students’ ability into very good, good, moderate and low ability based on Bung Hatta University criterion. Based on the result of data analysis it was found that the second year students’ ability in arranging jumbled sentences to create a descriptive paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University in general was very good. It was proved by the evidence thatin general 60% of them had very good ability to arrange jumbled sentences to create a descriptive paragraph, and in specifically 40% of them had moderate ability in arranging jumbled sentences to describe a place, 55% of them had very good ability in arranging jumbled sentences to describe a person and 60% of them had very good ability in arranging jumbled sentences to describe a thing. Based on the conclusion, the lecturers are suggested to improve the students’ ability in arranging jumbled sentences to create a descriptive paragraph. Students should improve their writing skill by using jumbled sentences and do more exercise on them.
