Abstract

The purpose of the research is to analyze the domestic responsibility and the treatment on women in their subordinate Indian society as reflected in the novel, The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. The analysis used Feminism theory. The technique applied is close reading. The main analysis is about three women characters from three generations who live in the same house. The Indian women have position as daughters, as wives and as mothers. As daughters, they have the responsibility to help their mothers with house works and obeying their parents. As wives, their responsibilities are obeying their husband, delivering the babies and being a devoted wife. As mothers, the women have the responsibility to to educate the children and to take care of her children. The bad treatments that happen to women are in the forms of injustices and abuses in their society. The types of injustices are being neglected in affection, getting low education, being exploited, losing the right in dowry and inheritance and also getting low salary. Meanwhile, the types of abuses that the women get are marital violence and sexual harassment. Keywords: domestic responsibilities, treatment on women
