Abstract

The research discusses the setting-influenced behaviors of the main character in The Girl on The Train. It focuses on the setting of the story and the main characater’s behavior that are influenced by the setting. The goals of the research are to describe the story’s setting and the main character’s behavior under the influence of the setting. The technic used to get the data is close reading so that the content of the story can be fully understood. To analyze the data found, the writer uses Structuralism. The research results to some findings about the setting and the main character’s behavior influenced by setting. The setting that are found include geographical locations and general environment. The setting that come as geographical location is an underpass. The location’s atmosphere influences the main character so that she walking fast and remembering when being there. The next setting is general environment. It includes the main character’s emotional and mental condition. The setting that come as emotional condition are the main character’s hurt and bored feeling. The hurt feeling makes the main character looking at a couple lived by a married couple. While the feeling of bored causes Rachel to drink alcohol. For the mental condtion, there are the main character’s forgetfulness and distracted thought. The forgetfulness makes the main character apologizing everytime waking up forgetting what happened previously. And the main character’s distracted thought makes her acting impetuously. In short, the setting holds a big role on what the main character decides to do. Keywords: structuralism, setting, behavior
