Abstract
In this thesis, the writer analyzes about conflicts an Indian woman as the main character in The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. The novel describes the caste system that exists in India. The caste system makes a conflict for the main character in the novel. Where the main character must faces the injustice prevailing in her country. The injustice seems real, even a relationship was arranged in the caste system. Thus making the main character fight and die will be the result. The writer used structuralism theory at this thesis. The analysis has goals which are describing the traits of the character, setting and the conflict of the character. The technique that the writer used is close reading to gain understanding the structure of the novel. The result of the research is the caste system makes the main character faces conflicts. In conclusion, caste system of India brings us to the conflict in the novel. Keywords: characters, social environment, external and internal conflict
