Abstract
This study aims to investigating the lexical cohesion in the text of short stories written by Hans Christian Andersen. The writer chose three short stories entitled The Last Dream of The Old Oak, The Saucy Boy and The Princes and The Pea to determined what are the types of lexical cohesion and also what the most dominant appeared in the text of short stories. The writer used descriptive qualitative method in this research and the data in this research are the words, phrases and the sentences in the text of short stories. The data in this reseach collected by reading the text and categorized the words, phrases or sentences that included in lexical cohesion based on Halliday and Hassan’s theory. After analyzed the data, the writer found not all short stories of the data consist all the items of lexical cohesion. In the 1stshort story the writer found total 25 repetition, 16 synonym, 11 hyponym, 2 meronym,1 general word and 6 collocation. In the 2nd short story the writer found 3 repetition, 1 synonym, 1 hyponym, 1 general word, 6 collocation and the writer did not found the the type of meronym. In the 3rd short story the writer only found the item of lexical cohesion namely repetition 4, and collocation 3.The item of lexical cohesion most appear is repetition totally 32 occurrences in short stories, the next is synonym, collocation, hyponym.
