Abstract

A poem is not always understandable. In fact, not many people can easily interpret the real message behind a whole poem or even only a line of a poem. This phenomena occurs because there are many words use that are not related with the topic. This can generate a confusion in the reader. Therefore, the writer is intrigued to analyze the poem especially the ones that are made by William Wordsworth (1798-1850). This paper focuses on the metaphor and metaphorical mappings contained in the number of William Wordsworth poems. The purpose of this paper is to find the metaphor and metaphorical mappings contained in those poems. The theories used in analyzing the data are the theories proposed by Lakoff & Johnson (1980) and Kovecses (2003). Metaphor is a comparison between two things essentially unlike, and can be similarly expressed and understood across cultures for it enlightens and structure human experience. Further discussion of the meaning of the metaphor is defined based on the content of the entire poem. Qualitative method is applied in the collection of the data. The analysis is performed by selecting some poems and take them as the data. From the data analysis, the writer finds five of metaphors to express happiness, love, animal, nature and life. There are 12 poems that analyze by the writer, metaphor to express love commonly found in this poem, and the least is found in the poem is metaphor to express animal. In addition, the writer also finds the metaphorical mappings that are frequently appear in the poems by William Wordswoth. Ultimately, the results of this analysis are presented in the form of words or phrases and are supported with tables to clarify the results of the analysis.
