Abstract

In this research, the writer analyzes kind of metaphors in Grimm Brothers’ short stories. The writer also tries to explain the meaning of metaphor. Furthermore, the writer provides some metaphor references to complete this study in theoretical framework to find the concept in this research and look at the other thesis to compare the similarity or difference in the previous study. The data comes from the Grimm Brother’s short stories that the writer has selected. The writer also utilizes a qualitative method to analyze, as well as several techniques to collect data, including: reading a short story as the first step, identifying words related to metaphor as the second step, and classifying each metaphor based on Ullman's theory, and then analyze the data in this study using Beekman and Callow’s theory as the final step. The results of this study showed there are 12 Anthropomorphic Metaphor, 15 Animal Meatphor, 11 Metaphor from Concrete to Abstract, and 13 Synaesthetic Metaphor. Therefore, The writer discovered no prevailing type in the short stories. Since this short story is a literature for children, in this short stories children are introduced with the use of various languages and the writer may infer in the short stories some of the metaphor did not using a clear images. Furthermore, the meaning from each metaphor can be interpreted through the existing context.
