Abstract

Language is an expression of emotional and feeling of people to each other. The present study investigate the features that used by men and women in their conversation to reveal the language features that they use. The language features refer to the speaker’s emotional or psychological state when they talk with others. In analyzing the data the writer used theory by Lakoff (2003), Bi (2010), and Coates (2004) about men and women language features. The method used in this study was qualitative method that means to achieve the result of phenomenon of the study with the approach of sociolinguistics, especially on language features theory. Data of this study were taken from two different movies (The Gentlemen and Charlie Angels) from the data analysis the result shows: (1) there are six men’s language features such as minimal response, swearing and taboo language, command and directives, compliments, question, and theme. (2) there are eight from ten women’s language features found in the Charlie Angels movie such as, lexical hedges or hedges fillers, rising intonation on declarative, emphatic stress, hypercorrect grammar, super polite form, empty adjectives, intensifiers, avoidance of strong swear word. The data that writer earn from the research are divided into two form, there are women’s langauge features there are 56 total data earned from Charlie Angels movie and the most used feature is rising intonation there are also two features that did not appear in the source of data there are color terms and tag question, and men’s language features there are 124 data that achieved fomr The Gentlemen movie, and the most used feature is swearing and taboo language. In conclussion, both of the langauge features are possibly used by the opposite gender that having specific circumstances, although the frequency of the both language features used by opposite gender small, but there always a posibility that makes the character uses the features depend on the situation and the relationship between the user of the features. The result implicates for English study in terms of language features enrichment and develop better communication atmosphere.
