Abstract

ABSTRACT Mindra, F.N. (2023) An Analysis of the Third Year Students’ Speaking Ability in Giving Argument Through Group Discussion at English Department of Bung Hatta University Advisor: Fitrina Harmaini, S.S, M.A. The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ speaking ability in giving argument through group discussion at English Department of Bung Hatta University. There are 5 aspects needed to be described; they are content, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and grammar. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research is the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Total sampling was used in this research and the number of sample was 27 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research was speaking test. The researcher used teaching-learning process to be the topic for the speaking test. The researcher also used inter-rater technique to know the reliability of the test. The coefficient correlation of the test was 0.99. The result of this research showed that the third year students’ speaking ability in giving argument through group discussion at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. In details, The students’ ability in speaking seen from content was very good. It was proved that 37.03 % of students had very good ability in delivering content. The students’ ability in speaking seen from vocabulary was good. It was proved that 51.85% of students had good ability in using vocabulary. The students’ ability in speaking seen from grammar was very good. It was proved that 48.18 % of students had very good ability in using grammar. The students’ ability in pronunciation was good. It was proved that 37.03 of students had very good ability in pronunciation. The students’ ability in fluency was low. It was proved that 37.03% of students had low ability in fluency. Considering that students have low speaking ability, especially in fluency, the researcher gives one suggestion to English teachers, students and future researchers. English teachers are suggest to put more emphasis on speaking activities in class. Students should speak more in English in carrying out speaking activities.
