Abstract

Speech Acts are explained as the activities to saying something (Austin, 1962 in cutting, 2002). According to Austin (1962) there are three types of speech acts: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlucotionary speech acts. while Searle (1976) developed into five types, they are representative, directive, declarative, commisive, expressive. Furthermore, Searle states that command is the part of directives speech act; speech act of commanding used by the people when the speaker wants the hearer to do something directly or indirectly. The purpose of this research is to find out the commanding speech acts in the movie and how communication strategies used by the characters to command. The researcher used theory of speech acts and communication strategy stated by Brown and Levinson (1987) for analyzing the data of command. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method, which means by collecting in-depth analysis of research phenomenon by using pragmatic approaching, particularly speech act commanding and communication strategies. The data of this research were taken from the Lord of The Ring: The Return of King movie. After analyzing the data, the results show: (1) there are various forms of commanding used by the characters in different strategies. (2) communication strategies used in terms of bald on record (67 data), Bald on record with redressive that use positive politeness (12 data), and negative politeness strategy; and Off Record strategy (2 data). (3) The most dominant communication strategy used in commanding speech act is bald on record because the movie is about war. In the battle situation people command directly or baldly without redressive. In some contexts, they command with redressive that apply the positive politeness, such as be optimistic, offer, promise, and use in group identity; and negative politeness with strategy be pessimistic, and off record with strategy give hints.
