Abstract

In this paper, the writer analyzes about conflicts of the main character as seen in The Giver by Lois Lowry. This research is focused on conflict of the main character (Jonas). Jonas is a young boy who selected to inherit the position of the Receiver of Memory. The Receiver of Memory is a job in the community for someone who holds the important memory that can be used for advising the Elder. As the receiver of memory Jonas sensed the difference between the rules in their community and what is seen in some of the memories of the society. It makes him involved in some conflicts in his life. In this research, the writer used structuralism theory to find relationships and connections among intrinsic elements in literary work, such as the relationship between characters, settings, and plot in this research. This is a qualitative research conducted by applying the close-reading method. Based on the result of the research, the writer found that Jonas has external conflicts and internal conflicts that were influenced by his traits. The technique that the writer used is close reading to gain understanding the structure of the novel. Keywords:structuralism, character, setting, external and internal, conflicts.
