Abstract

The analysis of this thesis focused on prejudice towards black people which is directed by the whites in the novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. There are two problem formulations that will be examined in this thesis, first, prejudices toward black people which represented in the novel and then the struggles to fight the negative prejudice. And the purpose of the formulation of the problem is to find out the types of prejudices directed by white people to blacks and also how blacks fight negative prejudices. To analyze the novel, the writer uses prejudice theory. The writer uses the close reading method in analyzing the novel. There are two results in this new research. First, the writer finds two types of prejudice toward black people directed by whites, namely positive and negative. Each of which also has several parts. Positive prejudice at this level is divided into two, namely cool and fashionable. While negative prejudice is divided into four parts, that is the indigent, drug dealers, threats and violence. Second, the discovery of attempts by black people to face or fight negative prejudice in the form of legal suings and demonstration.
