Abstract

Purpose of this research is to find the effectiveness of using English song in teaching vocabulary. This study was conducted to the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Keacamatan Payakumbuh. Method of this research is quantitative by taking 56 students as the sample out of 196 students of populations. The sample was divided into two classes; 28 students for experimental class and 28 students for control class. Before giving treatment, the researcher gave pre-test. Then the researcher taught the experiment class by asking students to listen to the English songs and in control class without asking students to listen to English songs. After sixth meetings, the researcher gave the post-test to both classes. The scores of pretest and post-test were collected from thirty multiple-choice questions, then, it was analyzed by using t-test. The reliability of the test was 0.83 and the coefficient correlation of the whole test was 0.74. Findings of this research show that teaching vocabulary by using English songs was effective. It is proved by tcount (4.9) which is higher than ttable at the significance level 0.05 and degree of freedom (2.05). It is considered that the null hypothesis (H0) in this research was rejected and the research hypothesis (H1) “there is a significant difference achievement of students’ vocabulary development taught by using English songs and students taught by using conventional media was accepted”. Based on the research finding, it can be interpreted that English songs are effective to develop students’ vocabulary mastery. English teachers of junior high school are suggested to use English song to facilitate teaching vocabulary since it has been proven that English song is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
