Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the comprehension of the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University in apply metacognitive strategy in comprehending short story of “The Gift of The Magi”. The researcher used total sampling technique. In collecting data, the researcher used reading test. The researcher found the reliability of the test was high (0,74). It means that the test was reliable. Based on the finding, the researcher found that there were 86.54% of students had moderate application metacognitive in comprehending short story of “The Gift of The Magi” . Students’ comprehension of short story of “The Gift of The Magi” were 46.15% of students had high comprehension, in comprehending the character of short story of “The Gift of The Magi” 67.30% of students had moderate comprehension, in comprehending the plot short story of The Gift of The Magi, 78.85% of students had moderate comprehension, In students comprehension the theme short story of “The Gift of The Magi”, 63.46% of students had moderate comprehension. Based on the result, the researcher gives suggestion to English lecturers of English Department, Bung Hatta University to the students to apply metacognitive strategy in reading comprehension about short story and give more explanation and application about metacognitive strategy. For the students, they are suggested to apply metacognitive strategy. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to find out the students’ application of metacognitive strategy in comprehending short story through experimental research.
