Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability the second year students’ at SMA 3 Lubuk Basung in writing narrative text using picture series. The population of this research was the second year students of SMA 3 Lubuk Basung. The total number of sample members were 119 students chosen by using stratified random sampling technique. And class XI IPS-1 and XI IPA 1 that had was chosen as the sample. The data was collected through writing test. In this test, the researcher gave some picture series to be chosen by students and wrote about narrative text. The test was valid in terms of content and the coefficient of correlation of the test was .52 (moderate correlation), so the test was reliable. The result of the research showed that the ability of the second year students SMA 3 Lubuk Basung in writing narrative text was moderate (80%). In specific, their ability in writing generic structure was moderate (80%), their ability in using appropriate vocabulary was moderate (96,67%), their ability in applying language features was high (40%), their ability in applying mechanics was moderate (73,34%). Referring to the result of this research, the writer gave suggestions to the teacher suggested to apply picture series in teaching process especially in writing narrative text. Because using picture series can increase the students’ writing ability. For the students, they are expected to do more exercise to write narrative text. They should pay attention about explenasion of the teacher about narrative text. For the students, they are expected to do more exercise to write narrative text.
