Abstract

This research has attempted to describe the ability on the first grade students at SMKN 1 Padang to write descriptive text using picture. The design of this research was 544 students. The researcher used stratified random sampling technique to determine the sample since the students have been populatian member in four difference groups were (technique construction, technique electronic, technique machine and technique venicle. Each group of population consists of some classes. Then it has been chosen randomly. The researcher got class X AV-C, X TP-C, GB-B and TKR-A as the sample the sample of this research. The researcher used writing test to collect the data. In this test, the researcher gave some picture to be choosen by students and wrote about descriptive text. The test was valid in terms of content and the coefficient of correlation of the test was 0.90 (very hight), so the test was reliable (see appendix 4) The result of research showed that the ability on the first grade students SMKN 1 Padang to write descriptive text was moderate (71.59%) (see appendix 8). In specifict,their ability to write identification was moderate (64.77%) (see appendix 12), their ability to write description was moderate (72.72%) (see appendix 16), their ability to use language features was moderate (73.86%) (see appendix 20), their ability to use vocabulary was moderate (67.04%) (see appendix 24), and their ability to use mechanics was moderate (70.45%) (see appendix 28). Based on the result above, the researcher give suggestion to both the English teacher and students. Since the result of study was moderate, the researcher suggests the english teacher to give more knowledge, explantion, practice in order to help students to improve their ability to write descriptive text. The students should pay attention to write identification, description, to use language features, vocabulary and mechanics. They should do a lot of practices and exercises in older to improve their ability to write descriptive text.
