Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University to translate scientific text from English into Indonesian. This research aimed at describing the ability of students to translate scientific text in terms of lexical equivalence and grammatical adjustment. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the fourth year students at English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Bung Hatta University. The total number of population was 53 students. The researcher used convenience sampling as the technique of the sampling. Forty-one of students were taken as the sample of the research. The instrument used to gather data of this research was translation test and it consisted of one paragraph. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the ability of fourth year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University to translate scientific text from English into Indonesian was moderate. 10 students (24.39%) had good ability, 21 students (51.21%) had moderate ability and 10 students (24.39%) had bad ability to translate scientific text in term of lexical equivalent. Then the result of the study also revealed that 13 students (34.15%) had good ability, 19 students (39.02%) had moderate ability, and 9 students (26.83%) had bad ability to translate scientific text in term of grammatical adjustment. Based on those findings above, it could be concluded that the students’ ability to translate scientific text from English into Indonesian in term of lexical equivalent and grammatical adjustment is moderate. The researcher suggested that lecturer gives more examples and exercise related to grammatical adjustment and lexical equivalent in translating scientific text. The researcher suggested that the students do more exercises and read journals or articles related to scientific text. They will gain much knowledge there so that they will be familiar with the text that they are going to translate.
