Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe students’ ability in reading comprehension to get the essential information from the passage. Essential information is the basic information. To get the essential information, the students use wh question to answer the question. The population of this research was the third year students at English department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 47 students, they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through reading test in the form of short anwer test. To make the test reliable, the reseacher used inter-rater technique. It means that there were two scorers to check students answers. It was found that the correlation coefficients was 0.944. It means that the test was reliable. Then the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability at English Department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information from passage in general was low. It was proved by the finding that was 70.21 % students had low ability. The ability of the third year students at English department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information by using question who was low. It was proved by finding that was 48.93 % students had low ability. The ability of the third year students at English department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information by using question when was good. It was proved by finding that was 31.91. % students had good ability. The ability of the third year students at English department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information by using question where was very good. It was proved by finding that was 57.44 % students had very good ability. The ability of the third year students at English department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information by using question what was low. It was proved by finding that was 44.68 % students had low ability. The ability of the third year students at English department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information by using question why was low. It was proved by finding that was 82.98 % students had low ability. The ability of the third year students at English department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information by using question how was low. It was proved by finding that was 93.61 % students had low ability. Referring to the results of this research, the researcher concluded that the ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University to get the essential information from the passage in general was low. Dealing with UNIVERSITAS BUNG HATTAiv the conclusion, the lecturers need to improve students’ ability to get the essential information from passage and give more explanation about the characteristic of question that leads to inference question. The students should do more exercises about how to get the essential information, be an active reader and pay attention to the reading material. The last, the researcher suggested other researchers study about factors making students have some mistakes and find out the students’ difficulties in getting the essential information from the passage
