Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the Second Grade students at MTSN Durian Tarung Padang in comprehending a descriptive text . The design of this research was descriptive method. The population members of this research were 305. In selecting the sample,the researcher used Convenience sampling technique. The number of sample was 36 students. The instrument to get the data was reading test. The researcher tried out the test by using split half method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (0.87)see Appendix 4. It means that the test was reliable. The result of the data analysis showed that the ability of the second grade students at MTSN Durian Tarung Padang in comprehending a descriptive text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 27 students (79.42%) had moderate ability(see Appendix 13). It was proved by the fact that 20 students (58.82%) in comprehending identification had moderate ability(see Appendix17). Then, the ability of the students in comprehending description of descriptive text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 19 students (55.89%) had moderate ability (see Appendix 21). Based on the result of the research, it could be concluded that the students’ ability in comprehending a descriptive text could be categorized into moderate ability. Based on the finding, the lecturer should give more exercises and motivation to the students. For the students, they are expected to do more exercises about comprehending a descriptive text. For the next researcher, it is suggested to do the research on other aspects like errors made by students in comprehending a descriptive text.
