Abstract

In this study the writer analyzes about the main character's traits that indicate psychopaths which are pictured in Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King. This research has two purposes: (1) to describe about the causing factors of the main character's psychopathic traits and (2) to describe about psychopathic traits of the main character. In analyzing this novel, the writer used psychology of literature offered by Wellek and Warren. However, since the character shows psychopathic traits, Robert Hare’s classification of psychopathic feature is applied. Hare states that psychopaths have several characteristics. Then also Hare states that psychopaths have several causes. The writer does a technique of close reading based on a psychology of literature approach and used method descriptive to explain data and topic. In this study the writer found the causing factors of Brady’s psychopath personality disorder. There are three causing factors, which are: Firstly, nature which consists of inconsiderate and insensitive and violent, second, nurture which consists of emotional abuse and poverty, finally, an interactive models: nature and nurture which consists of lying and manipulative, educated violence from his mother, and the experience of murder with his mother. Meanwhile, the characteristics of Brady's psychopathic traits, are: Firstly, Glib and Superficial which consists of charming and witty, second, egocentric and grandiose, third, Lack of Empathy which consists of heartless and contemptuous, fourth, deceitful and manipulate which consists of lying and manipulate, fifth, poor behavior controls which consists of give threats and anger, sixth, lack of responsibility, and seventh, criminal versatility which consists of steal and kill.
