Abstract

This study aims at investigating the use of code mixing in the novel Cintapuccino by Ica Rahmawati. Novel is one of media to share code-mixing phenomenon. Mostly code-mixing phenomenon in novel used informal situation. Therefore, the writer is interested to analyze and prove that code-mixing occur in novel. In this research the writer uses sociolinguistic and semantic theories. The writer used some theories stated by McKay and Nancy theory (1996), to briefing limit studies, take a notes and obey the guidance technique of collecting data, then the writer uses the basic concepts of data analysis, founded themes and formulating the theory and analyze based on the theory) to analyzed the data. The research design of this study is qualitative research by Basrowi and Suwandi (2008). It is because all the data collection is in the form of words. There is only one kind of source of data in this research. That is, the dialogue spoken by the characters in the novel Cintapuccino. From the data analysis, the writer found there are three types of code mixing use in Cintapuccino novel based on the theory of Holmes (2001). They are (1) Intra sential code mixing, (2) Intra Lexical code mixing and (3) involving a change of pronunciation. Besides, the writer also found the form of code mixing. They are (1) the insertion of word, (2) the insertion of phrase, and (3) the insertion of sentence. In conclusion, the writer suggests the students of English Department to analyze the code mixing in movie or script. It is also expected that the future researchers can develop this research by including all related aspects of code mixing, especially about the language of the dialogue in a novel.
