Abstract

The writer studied two song lyrics containing the word yume, meaning dream to be realized, in the album The End. The two song lyrics were written by two different song writers. This study is a qualitative research, using descriptive methods. To find the meaning, it required application of Roland Barthes’ five codes that consisted of hermeneutic, proairetic, semantic, symbolic and cultural code. The hermeneutic code for Eyes for the Moon song lyric is ‘who are you? and where are you going, you who walk alone?’ This question relates to the background of the song writer who never gave up on his dreams. The proairetic code is an idea of the song writer in taking action towards the achievement of his dreams. The semantic code is utilizing time needle to fight for his dream. The symbolic code is the needle of time which is a symbol of opportunity to keep striving to achieve his dream. The cultural code is the cultural background of watching the moon in Japan (tsukimi). The hermeneutic code for Glamorous Sky song lyric is ‘why scream and spirit increases?’ This question relates to the background of the song writer who never gave up and rebellious. The proairetic code is an idea of the song writer to get out of a difficult period and keep the spirit in achieving her dream. The semantic code is the star adorns the chest, which means dream in the heart. The symbolic code is the star symbolized dreams. The cultural code is seen in yukibana flower in winter. The meaning of dreams for the two song lyrics is although dreams cannot be realized at the moment but with unyielding spirit and optimism dreams still exist. Key words: lyrics, yume, Roland Barthes’ codes, meaning
