Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze students' ability in translating a political news from English into Indonesia at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The specific purposes of this research were to analyze the students' abilities in using both lexical equivalence and grammatical adjustment when translating a political news from English into Indonesian. To do this research, the researcher used descriptive method. The population was the fourth year students, and the sample was 24 students who were chosen by using a total sampling technique. The researcher used a translating test in collecting the data. The data were collected by using google form. The researcher used the inter-rater technique to know reliability and the result of reliability analysis was 0.94. It means the test was reliable and could be used as the instrument. The result of this research showed that the ability of the fourth year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University in translating a political news was good. It was proved by the fact that 62.5% had good ability. In detail, the students’ ability in using lexical equivalence when translating a political news was good and it was proved by the fact that 62.5% students had good ability. The students’ ability in using grammatical adjustment of translating a political news was also very good and it was proved by the fact that 79.2% students had very good ability. Referring to the findings of this research, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in translating a political news from E nglish into Indonesian was good. Therefore, the lecturers are suggested to improve the method of teaching Translation subject. The students are suggested to lean more about translating and consider the aspects of translation.
