Abstract

A formal invitation letter is a document that presents a formal request for the presence of people, company, or an organization at an event. In learning process, making an error is a common thing .The analyses of student’s errors are very important, because students will know their error in writing formal invitation letter. The aim of this research was to describe the type of students’ errors in writing formal invitation letter at social science class in SMAN 2 Bayang. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the second year students at social science class in SMAN 2 Bayang. The total samples were 29 students, they were chosen by using convenience sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It meant that there were two assessors to check the students’ error. The correlation coefficient of the assessment was 0.91. It meant that the test was reliable. The research findings showed that in the 29 analyzed data, 5 types of error and 234 errors were obtained. The results showed that in writing formal invitation letter there were (5) types of students’ error and several categories of students’ errors. The students’ errors include (a) format error (head of letter/ letterhead, date of sending the letter, recipient’s name and address, salutation, body of the letter, closing the letter, sender’s name and signature), b) grammatical error (prepositions, tenses, and articles), c) lexical errors (word choice), d) syntax error (word order and subject verb agreement), and e) mechanical / substance errors (punctuation, capitalization, and spelling). The result showed that the most type of format error was writing the date sending of the letter. The total error was 27 errors and the percentage was 21,3%. The most type of grammatical error was error in using the tenses. The total error was 15 errors and the percentage was 51,8 %. The most type of lexical error was error in word choice. The total error was 12 errors and the percentage was 5,1 %. The most type of syntax error was error in word order. The total error was 7 and the percentage was 77,8 %. The most type of mechanical error was capitalization. The total error was 25 errors and the percentage was 43,9 %. Generally, the students at social science class in SMAN 2 Bayang had format error, grammatical error, syntax error, lexical error, and mechanical error in writing the formal invitation letter. This research was expected to be beneficial for: first, the study would help raise awareness in teachers that the students should be taught to write good formal letters because it was useful for their daily lives. Second, for the future researcher, the research would be useful in order to see the comparative results and more varied data resulted from them.
