Abstract

This research aims to explore the potential of designing a star observatory building as a tourist education site with a metaphorical architectural approach in Padang City. The study is motivated by the increasing interest in astronomy education and tourism, coupled with the need for innovative architectural solutions that blend functionality with symbolism. Through a comprehensive literature review and site analysis, this research identifies the key principles of observational astronomy, educational tourism, and the significance of metaphorical architecture in conveying complex ideas. The methodology involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, including case studies of existing observatories, surveys, interviews with experts in astronomy and architecture, and design workshops. These methods provide insights into the preferences and requirements of potential visitors, as well as the technical considerations in designing a functional observatory facility. The conceptual framework integrates elements of astronomy, local culture, and sustainable design principles to develop a metaphorical architectural language that reflects the celestial themes while resonating with the cultural and environmental context of Padang City. The design process emphasizes the synthesis of form and function, creating spaces that facilitate both scientific observation and educational interaction. The outcomes of this research include a conceptual design proposal for the star observatory building, incorporating innovative architectural features such as celestial motifs, interactive exhibits, and sustainable materials. The proposed design aims to enrich the tourism landscape of Padang City, offering visitors a unique educational experience that fosters appreciation for astronomy and cultural heritage.
