Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second-year students’ speaking ability through short conversation at MAN 2 Tanah Datar. There are 5 aspects that needed to be described, they are content, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and grammar. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research is the second-year students’ at MAN 2 Tanah Datar. Total sampling was used on this research and the number of samples was 34 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research was speaking test. The researcher also used inter-rater technique to know the reliability of the test. The reliability coefficient of the test is 0.93 and it means it has very high correlation. The result of this research showed that the second-year students’ speaking ability through short conversation at MAN 2 Tanah Datar was high. It was proved that 64,70 % of students had high ability in speaking ability through short conversation at MAN 2 Tanah Datar. In detail, the students’ ability in speaking ability seen from content was bad. It was proved that 82,35 % of students had low ability in delivering content. The students’ ability in speaking seen from vocabulary was high. It was proved that 97,05 % of students had high ability in using vocabulary. The students’ ability in speaking seen from grammar was high. It was proved that 85,29 % of students had high ability in using grammar. The students’ ability in pronunciation was low. It was proved that 41,17% of students had low ability in pronunciation. The students’ ability in fluency was high. It was proved that 52,94% of students had high ability in fluency. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the second-year students’ speaking ability through short conversation at MAN 2 Tanah Datar was very good. The researcher suggests that the teachers have to work harder in teaching students, especially in content and pronunciation. For the students, the researcher suggest them to learn more about content and do more practice to improve their ability. For the next researchers, the researcher suggests that they investigate students’ problem in content and pronunciation of short conversation.
