Abstract

The type of this research was correlational design. This research was aimed at finding out the correlation between imperative sentence mastery and writing procedure text ability of second year student at SMPN 1 Tanjung Mutiara. The population of research was the second year students in SMPN 1 Tanjung Mutiara. Size of sample was 28, due the number of the students, the researcher used cluster random sampling. The researcher used two instruments to collect the data. First was grammar test to collect the data on imperative sentence mastery (X) and second was writing test to collect the data on writing ability (Y). Based on the result of data analysis, it was found rcounted .04. The value of rtable with level of significance .05 and degree of freedom (df = n-2) was .37. it means that r counted was lower than rtable (.04 < .37). The hypothesis “there is no significant correlation between imperative sentence mastery and their ability to write a procedure text at SMPN 1 Tanjung Mutiara” was accepted. From the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there was no significant correlation between imperative sentence mastery and their ability to write a procedure text. It means that imperative sentence did not give influence to writing procedure text, but there are many factor correlate with writing procedure. The researcher proposes suggestions. The first is for teacher in selecting material for writing especially in writing procedure text, the teacher should consider the complexity of sentence in the text, especially imperative sentence. Second in for students in order to improve their ability in writing procedure text, they should make effort to increase their mastery in imperative sentence.
