Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta Universityin finding the meaning of high frequency used words through word parts. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The population of this research was 37 first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. In selecting the sample, the researcher used total technique sampling. The number of sample was 37 students. The instrument used to get the data was vocabulary test. The researcher tried out the test to the students out of sample. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using split-half method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (.90). It means that the test was reliable. The result of the data analysis showed that the ability of the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in finding the meaning of high frequency used words through word parts was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 22 students (59.46%) had moderate ability. Then, the ability of the students in finding the meaning of high frequency used words by using prefixes was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 23 students (62.16%) had moderate ability. Then, the ability of students in finding the meaning of high frequency used words by using Suffixes was moderate. It was due to the fact that 22 students (59.46%) had moderate ability. In addition, the ability of students in finding the meaning of high frequency used words by using Prefix-Suffix was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 31 students (83.78%) had moderate ability. Based on the result of the research, it could be concluded that the students’ ability in finding the meaning of high frequency used words through word partscould be categorized into moderate ability. Based on the findings, the researcher suggests that researcher should give more exercises and motivation to the students. The students are expected to learn more and to do more exercises in finding the meaning of high frequency used words through word parts. Furthermore, the researcher suggests the next researcher to find out students’ difficulties in finding the meaning of high frequency used words through word parts.
