The total number of the population members was 37. The researcher used total sampling to select the sample. It means all of the population were the sample members. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The result of the test was reliable. It is supported by the fact that the result of correlation of coefficient after doing the test was .96 (see Appendix 4). It was categorized as very high correlation. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity because it had covered all material which student had learnt. The data were gathered by writing sentence test given to the students. The researcher limited her research in the difficulties of the first year students at Bung Hatta University in using regular verb, irregular verb and to be 2 in writing simple sentences to express past activities especially in affirmative form. Based on the result above, the lecturers are suggested to minimize the students’ difficulties by giving appropriate ways.
