Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta Universityin pronouncing English vowel. The design of this research was descriptive in nature. The population of this research was 37 first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. In selecting the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. The number of sample was 37 students.The instrument used to get the data was pronunciation test. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using inter rater method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (.81). It means that the test was reliable. The result of the data analysis showed that the ability of the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in pronouncing back vowels was very good. It was proved by the fact that (56.76%) students had very good ability. Then, the ability of the students in pronouncing back vowel /u:/ was very good. It was proved by the fact that (78.38%) students had very high ability. Then, the ability of students in pronouncing back vowel /u/ was very high. It was due to the fact that (89.19%) students had very high ability. In addition, the ability of students in pronouncing back vowel /ͻ:/was low. It was proved by the fact that (64.84%) students had low ability.Furthermore, the ability of students in pronouncing back vowel /ͻ/ was very good. It was proved by the fact that (89.19%) students had low ability. Based on the result of the research, it could be concluded that the students’ ability in pronouncing back vowels could be categorized into very good ability. Based on the findings, the researcher suggests that researcher should give more exercises and motivation to the students. The students are expected to learn more and to do more practice inpronouncing back vowels. Furthermore, the researcher suggests the next researcher to find out students’ difficulty in pronouncing back vowels.
