Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words found in report text. The design of this research was descriptive method. The population of this research was 54. In selecting the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. The number of sample was 28 students. The instrument to get the data was reading test. The researcher tried out the test by using split half method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was high (0.79). It means that the test was reliable. The result of the data analysis showed that the ability of the third year student at English Department of Bung Hatta University to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words found in report text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 25 students (89.29%) had moderate ability. Then, the ability of the students to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words through definition clues found in report text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 23 students (82.14%) had moderate ability. Then, the ability of the students to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words through example clues found in report text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 21 students (75%) had moderate ability. In addition, the ability of the students to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words through contrast clues found in report text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 17 students (60.71%) had moderate ability. Furthermore, the ability of students to identify the types of context clues found in report text was moderate ability, it was proved by the fact that 19 students (67.86%) had moderate ability. Based on the result of the research, it could be concluded that the students’ ability to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words found in report text could be categorized into moderate ability. Based on the finding, the lecturer should give more exercises and motivation to the students. For the students, they are expected to do more exercises about guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words through context clues. For the next researcher, it is suggested to do the research on other aspects like errors faced by students to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words.
