Abstract

This research was attempted to describe thethirdyear students of SMA Adabiah Padang to identify generic structure of report text. The members of population of this research were60students. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling in taking the sample. The population consists of two strata; that is Natural Science (IPA) and Social Science(IPS). In collecting data, the reseacher usedreadingtest. It is kind of multiple choice test. The researcher asked the students to choose the appropriate answer among four alternative choices provided. The number of item of test is 35 for try out and the real test is 30 items. The researcher measured the ability of the third year students‘ ability to identify in generic structurethat consists of two parts namely, general classification and description. Based on the result of the data analysis,the researcher found the reliability coeffecient correlation was 0.83 (see appendix 4). In analyzing the data, the researcher did several steps. She presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score (M), and standard deviation (SD), classified the students who get high to low ability, and counted the percentage of them. After analyzing the data it is found that 76.67% (see appendix 11) of students got moderate ability in generic structure. In more specific concluded that 56 out of 60 students 93.33% (see appendix 12) got moderate ability in identifying general classification, 44 out of 60 students 73.33% (see appendix 13) got moderate abilityidentifying description of report text. Based on theresearch finding, it can be concluded that the third year students of SMA Adabiah Padang to identify generic structure of report text was moderate. Relating to this conclusion, she suggested the teacherto do some effort to improve student‘s ability by giving more variation on exercise to the students, and also suggested to use several kinds of media in teaching process. The students are expected to improve their ability. It can be done by various related to do more exercise about reading comprehension especially in report text.
