Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the ability of the second year students in writing sentences using degrees of comparison based on pictures. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The number of population members was 48 students. The researcher used total sampling. All members of population were used to be the sample. The instrument used to get the data was writing test. The students were asked to write 24 simple sentences: 4 affirmative sentences using positive degree, 4 affirmative sentences using comparative degree, 4 affirmative sentences using superlative degree, 4 negative sentences using positive degree, 4 negative sentences using comparative degree, and 4 sentences using superlative degree. The reliability index of the test was very high (.96) which means that the test was reliable. The test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of this research showed that in general the ability of the second year students in writing degrees of comparison based on pictures was very good. It was proved by the fact that there were 31 students (64.58%) who had very good ability, 14 students (29.17%) had good ability, 1 student (2.08%) had moderate ability, and 2 students (4.17%) had bad ability. In writing affirmative sentences using positive degree, the ability of the second year students was very good. It was proved by the fact that there were 38 students (79.17%) who had very good ability, 8 students (16.67%) had good ability, and 2 students (4.17%) had bad ability. In writing affirmative sentences using comparative degree, the ability of the second year students was very good. It was proved by the fact that there were 38 students (79.17%) who had very good ability, 5 students (10.42%) had good ability, 3 students (6.25%) had moderate ability, and 2 students (4.17%) had bad ability. In writing affirmative sentences using superlative degree, the ability of the second year students was very good. It was proved by the fact that there were 35 students (72.92%) had very good ability, 9 students (18.75%) had good ability, 1 student (2.08%) had moderate ability, and 3 students (6.25%) had bad ability. In writing negative sentences using positive degree, the ability of the second year students was also very good, and it was proved by the fact that there were 31 students (64.58%) had very good ability, 11 students (22.92%) had good ability, 1 student (2.08%) had moderate ability, and 5 students (10.42%) had bad ability. In writing negative sentences using comparative degree, the ability of the second year students was also very good, and it was proved by the fact that there were 31 students (64.58%) who had very good ability, 11 students (22.92%) had good ability, 4 students (8.33%) had moderate ability, and 2 students (4.17%) had bad ability. In writing negative sentences using superlative degree, the ability of the second year students was very good and good. It was proved that there were 18 students (37.5%) who had very good ability, 18 students (37.5%) had good ability, 2 students (4.17%) had moderate ability, and 10 students (20.83%) had bad ability. Referring to the result of this research, the researcher concluded that the ability of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in writing degrees of comparison based on pictures was very good. Dealing with the conclusion, the researcher suggests English lecturers to defend it and give enrichment about degrees of comparison. For the students, the researcher suggests that they must pay attention to mechanism of writing especially punctuation and capitalization because based on the answer sheets, students did not put full stop at the end of sentence, nor did they use correct capitalization in writing sentences using degrees of comparison.
