Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the third year students’ grammatical error in using correlative conjunction in writing compound sentence at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was 54 students attending Structure IV of English Department in 2015/2016 academic year. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample. It means the sample was all of the third year students, the students were distributed into two classes. The members of population were taught by using the same curriculum, syllabus, material, and lecturer in structure subject. The result of this study showed that the students made errors in omission, addition, misformation and misordering. In specific, there were 4 (7%) errors in omission of plurality, 43 (79%) errors in omission of s/es as the third singular person, 50 (92%) errors in omission of be, 7 (13%) errors in omission of article, 5 (9%) errors in addition of suffix –ed on irregular verb, 20 (37%) errors in addition of –be before verb, 3 (5%) errors in addition of –be before verb, 30 (55%) errors in misformation of there ‘be’, 44 (81%) errors in misordering of modal auxiliary, 0 (0%) errors in misordering of adjective. The researcher found that most errors made by the students were omission. Based on the result of the research, the lecturers are suggested to give to explain more about compound sentence, the rules to form correlative conjunction, to pay more attention in omission, addition, misformation and misordering errors made by the students, and to give more exercise about correlative conjunction. The students are expected to study harder and learn more about the form of compound sentence and correlative conjunction, especially to improve their understanding about writing compound sentence using correlative conjunction, and to review their lesson about compound sentence and correlative conjunction, especially omission in correlative conjunction.
