Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the third year students who made grammatical errors in writing argumentative paragraph of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The designofthisresearchwas descriptive. In this research, the population was the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. In selectingthesample,thewriterusedtotal samplingtechnique.The number of the population members was 54 students. They were divided into two classes; class A and class B. The sample of this research was 50 students. The instrumentation used to get the data was the writing test. To know the reliability of the test, the writer used inter-rater technique. The reliability index of the test was .99. It means the test was reliable. The result of analyzing data showed that the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical errors in omission, addition, and misformation errors in writing argumentative paragraph. The writer divided grammatical errors made by the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University into four types. In specific, there were 40 (80%) students who made grammatical errors of omission consisting of omission of plurality, omission of s/es as third singular person and omission of –be, 4 (8%) students did not make grammatical errors of addition, 2 (4%) students did not make grammatical errors of misformation, and 0 (0%) student did not make grammatical error of misordering. The finding of this research lead the writer to conclude that the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta Universitymade grammatical errors in omission (40 (80%) students) in writing argumentative paragraph. In line with such conclusion, the writer suggests the lecturersto minimize the students who made grammatical errors especially in omission by giving more exercises in writing argumentative paragraph. For the students, they are suggested to learn moreand do the exercises in writing argumentative paragraph. They also should know about grammatical errors they might do in writing so that they can be aware of making grammatical errors especially grammatical errors in omission of plurality, omission s/es as third singular person and omission of -be. For the next writer, it is suggested to find source of errors and the cause of errors made by the students in writing
