Abstract
The purpose of this research was to know the tenth grade students’ ability in applying simple sentence in past tense in writing a personal recount text. Specifically, it was to know the ability of the tenth grade students in writing simple sentence in past tense in the form of nonverbal sentence, verbal sentence using regular verb, and verbal sentence using irregular verb. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the tenth grade students at SMAN 13 Padang who have studied about simple sentence in past tense. The population of this research was 283 students. There were 61 students as the sample. In selecting the sample, the researcher used cluster random sampling. In this research, the researcher used writing test as the instrument. To see the reliability, the researcher used inter-rater method. The reliability index was .97 (very high correlation) (see Appendix 3). The result of the data analysis showed that the tenth grade students at SMAN 13 Padang were classified into having low ability in applying simple sentence in past tense in writing a personal recount text. It was proved by the fact that 43 students (70.49%) were categorized into having low ability and 18 students (29.51%) were categorized into having high ability (see Appendix 5). In addition, in writing simple sentence in past tense in the form of nonverbal sentence, it was found that 20 students (32.79) were categorized into having low ability and 41 students (67.21%) were categorized into having into high ability (see Appendix 7). In writing simple sentence in past tense in the form of verbal sentence using regular verb, there were also 20 students (32.79) who were categorized into having low ability and 41 students (67.21%) who were categorized into having high ability (see Appendix 9). Furthermore, in writing simple sentence in past tense in the form of verbal sentence using irregular verb, it was found that there were 30 students (49.18) who where categorized into having low ability and 31 students (50.82%) who where categorized into having high ability (see Appendix 11). Based on the explanation above, she could conclude that most of the students at SMA N 13 Padang still had low ability in applying simple sentence in past tense. Based on the result, she suggests that the teacher should give more exercises, ask the students to memorize the word of nonverbal, verbal (regular and irregular verb) and review the lesson about simple sentence in past tense. And for the students, she suggests them to pay attention to the teachers’ explanation about the lesson, especially simple sentence in past tense in the form of nonverbal and verbal using regular verb. Finally, for the other researchers, she suggests to do the research on the other cases such as factors that can increase students’ ability in applying simple sentence.
