Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in recognizing supporting details in paragraph . This research aimed at describing whether or not the students could recognize major supporting details and minor supporting details as a reflection of their ability in recognizing supporting details in paragraph. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students at English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Bung Hatta University. The total number of population was 51 students. Twenty-six of them were taken as the sample of this research by using simple random sampling. The instrument used to gathering data of this research was reading test. The test had eight questions. It consisted of four paragraph and each paragraph consists of two questions. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that 19 students (73.08%) had moderate ability and bad ability in recognizing supporting details. Then the result of the study also revealed that 22 students (84.62%) had very good ability and good ability in recognizing major supporting details. In addition, in recognizing minor supporting details, the result showed that 20 students (76.92%) had moderate ability and bad ability. Based on those findings above, it could be concluded that the students’ ability in recognizing supporting details was categorized into moderate and bad ability. Based on the result, the researcher suggested that lecturer gives an explanation to recognize supporting details more detail to differentiate major supporting details and minor details in order to improve their reading ability. Then, the lecturer gives more exercises for their comprehending in recognizing supporting details. The researcher suggested that the students have to do more exercises and re-read the material in order to improve their reading ability. Because knowledge is on what they read.
