Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the second year students’ speaking ability in presentation at English Department Bung Hatta University, Padang. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University, Padang. The total number of population was 45 students, and they were distributed into two classes: class A and class B. The researcher used simple random sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 15 students. Reliability coefficient was very high correlation (0.88). In collecting data, the researcher used speaking test. The researcher asked students to make presentation about advertisement based on their own topic. The researcher only measured the ability of the second year students’ speaking in presentation by considering five components of speaking: (content, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation). In analyzing the data, the researcher did several steps. She presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score (M), and standard deviation (SD), classified the students who got high to low ability, and counted the percentage of them. Based on the result of data analysis, it was indicated that the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University, Padang in general got moderate. It was proved by the evidence that there were 66.67% students classified got moderate in presentation, 60.00% students classified got moderate criteria in organizing idea (content), 40.00% students classified got moderate criteria in using grammar, 80.00% students classified got moderate criteria in appropriate vocabulary, 80.00% students classified got moderate criteria in terms of fluency, and 60.00%students classified got moderate criteria in terms of pronunciation. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that the second year students’ ability on speaking in presentation was moderate. Relating to this conclusion, she suggests the lecturer to improve their students’ speaking ability especially more practice in presentation. The lecturer should give their students the opportunities they need to communicate with other students in their class by using English, student talk to one or more people that to increase their organizing idea, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation. And the students expected to improve their speaking ability in presentation into high ability through practicing speaking especially in presentation. For the researchers, since the students’ speaking ability in presentation was moderate, the next researcher should find out the students’ difficulties in speaking especially in presentation.
